Beyond Competence: The Illusion of Professional Coaching Without Supervision

Coaching presents itself as a profession. Yet supervision is still not part of everyone’s practice. Within the International Coaching Federation (ICF), it is formally required only for team coaches — precisely where complexity is highest.

Team coaches operate in environments with multiple stakeholders, shifting dynamics, and a high level of ambiguity. It can be demanding and, at times, isolating. Even experienced coaches often carry the weight of these complexities alone.

For Sylviane Cannio, supervision is not an optional extra. It is a space to step back, reflect, and gain clarity — and sometimes to recognize, with humility, that we may not see everything as clearly as we believe.

As coaching continues to evolve — with changing models, growing expectations, and increasing complexity — an important question emerges:

If supervision is essential in the most complex situations, what might it bring to all coaching practices?

This session is an invitation to reflect together — seriously, and perhaps with a bit of lightness — on what it means to be a professional coach today.

During this session, participants will:

  • Reflect on the role of supervision in professional coaching
  • Explore the challenges of coaching in complex environments
  • Gain new perspectives on their own practice and blind spots
  • Discover how supervision can support ongoing professional growth

What to expect:

  • Introduction to Sylviane Cannio’s supervision model: “The Four Worlds”
  • Live demonstration of supervision in practice
  • Debriefing and shared reflections
  • Interactive Q&A

Main objectives:

  • Understand the value of supervision beyond mandatory contexts
  • Deepen awareness of complexity in coaching practice
  • Explore supervision as a space for reflection, learning, and evolution
  • Encourage a more conscious and mature coaching practice
